With the recent reappearance of Risen on the North American Steam store page I thought it would be a good time to give my impressions of this often overlooked gem of a game.

Valve erroneously VAC banned several thousand Modern Warfare 2 accounts over the past week due to an error or some such. In addition to unbanning those accounts, they've given each affected player a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 (if they didn't already own it) and a second copy to gift to a friend.

Stay classy Valve.

Earlier this week Alien Swarm was released via Steam for FREE! Along with the release came the Alien Swarm SDK and game code. Alien swarm is a top-down, 4-player co-op game powered by the source engine. The game looks beautiful and is incredibly fun and addictive.

Some of the features mentioned on the store page include:

  • Tactical, 4 player co-op action game with a top-down perspective
  • Complete game code and mod tools
  • Unlock persistent items by gaining levels
  • Over 40 weapons and equipment with countless loadout configurations
  • 4 unique classes and 8 unique characters
  • Matchmaking, Steam Cloud, Steam Stats
  • 64 achievements
  • Tile-based map generation tool
  • Powered by Source and Steam

A new TF2 Hat is receive after accomplishing an Alien Swarm achievement:

I get a lot of comments about the Calculator to the tune of "It says I bought X package but I bought all the games individually", "It's not showing the DLC I bought", "I didn't spend nearly that much."

I figured it's time to clear the air and explain just how the Steam Calculator works.

mac, steam,

Way to jump out of the gate Valve. Not people to do anything half-assed, they've launched Steam for the Mac with 63 games available at the start, and here's the kicker. If you own ANY of those games on Steam already, then you also own the Mac versions. In addition to their Source games, also included are the latest two Telltale adventures (Tales of Monkey Island and the in-progress Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse). LucasArts even has versions of all their old adventure games (like Dig) available with SteamPlay, on the Mac.

Good news for all those Mac gamers, of which there will certainly be more of now.

Also of note, Portal is Free until May 24th. So download that NOW.

steam, mac,

2K Games and Valve today announced an agreement to power all PC versions of the highly anticipated Sid Meier's Civilization V with many of Steamworks' features and offer a special Digital Deluxe Edition via Steam. Customers who pre-order the regular or Digital Deluxe editions of Sid Meier's Civilization V on Steam will be rewarded with a free map pack when the game launches in fall 2010.

Sid Meier's Civilization V players will enjoy the benefits of the Steamworks' features included in all PC versions, such as auto-updating, Steam Achievements, downloadable content, ability to access from any computer*, multiplayer matchmatching and more.

*In supported countries

OK, so it doesn't say anything about being a Steam exclusive, but as far as I know, the boycott of Steam by other Digital Distribution methods is still in effect since Modern Warfare 2 used Steamworks. I guess it's really working out for them, funneling more business Valve's way.

Steam launched their new UI yesterday, and although it was in beta for quite some time and many people have been using it, now everyone gets the joy of using their brand spanking new interface. There are a lot of new features with this new UI so I thought I'd outline the less obvious ones.

steam, new ui, tips and tricks,

GTA IV has been patched. Most noticeably the Rockstar Social Club app was removed, you still have to click play, but it won't be running in the background anymore. Yay! Also, shadows have been fixed and no longer look all cross-hatchy.

In addition to the patch, the DLC has been released on GFWL and Steam for the PC. I wasn't a huge fan of the base game, I didn't really like Niko much and it just seemed so fucking long. But I'm really enjoying The Lost and The Damned so far.

The end of March is upon us, and it looks like Left 4 Dead 2's DLC will be delayed, according to Shacknews.

The Passing sees Left 4 Dead 2's survivors meeting up with the original Left 4 Dead cast--three of them, anyway. New golf club and M60 weapons will be added as well as multiple new game modes, a new 'Fallen Survivor' special infected and a 'Witch Bride.'

Meanwhile, there are plenty of really awesome custom campaigns you can download and play. I've played 2 evil eyes, Fort Noesis and an unfinished campaign set in a jail. They're all of excellent quality and a lot of fun to play though. 2 evil eyes was a bit of a miss-mash of things from the official campaigns though.

The new boosters are understandable, having ways to make money is a good idea. However, it seems to be a little premature because there is not a lot of depth to the game yet. [url=http://madbohem.c...
