Steam launched their new UI yesterday, and although it was in beta for quite some time and many people have been using it, now everyone gets the joy of using their brand spanking new interface. There are a lot of new features with this new UI so I thought I'd outline the less obvious ones.

steam, new ui, tips and tricks,

I can't take credit for this, most of the work was done by other skinner TDD and Savage Alien. I just took what I liked about their skins and merged them into my own.

Just extract to your Steam/skin/ directory. A file in the Public/ folder is replaced for the addition of new menu items at the top.

Everyone go opt into the new Steam UI beta right now. It's fucking sexy as hell. It now uses Webkit instead of IE so things will be much more stable and faster overall. Woo!

More than any previous year, 2009 was the year that Digital Distribution truly started to establish itself. Being the service that kicked the whole thing off, Steam has naturally been leading this charge, with some fairly impressive marketing and sales designed to encourage more and more people to give DD a try. However, this year also marked other distributors and companies finally starting to come into their own. Taking a leaf out of Valve's playbook, services like Direct 2 Drive and Impulse have started adopting tactics such as snap sales and bargain bundles in order to generate hype, and in general have been starting to make a name for themselves. After all, at least for now there's still room to argue over who's number 2.

Comedy is all about timing, or so they say. It's not just about the right words, there are dozens, maybe hundreds of little variable all at work, trying to make you smile. The door opens and he strides hurriedly into the room, carrying stacks of books beneath each arm. He has no real name. We shall refer to him as "Gamer" for now.

Gotta hurry, library's closing soon he thinks to himself for the fourth time in three minutes. He knows it's been three minutes because he keeps checking his watch every fifteen seconds. Gamer sets the stacks down and pulls out a carrier bag, into which he roughly shoves the books he needs to return. As is normally the case for him, he waited until the last available minutes of the last available day to return them.

Steam has been getting a lot of positive press in recent years. Having been called everything from just another Digital Distribution system all the way through to outright saviour of the PC games industry, the truth, as always, is a little bit more complex. With everything that's changed with the system over the past five years, it's easy to say that Steam has made a lot of waves in a relatively short amount of time.

About a year ago, a brand new copy of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones was gently whirring away it's installation sequence in my drive. I was looking forward to finally concluding a series that I had started so many years ago. There, finished. Just need to restart the PC and... What the?

A few seconds after booting back in, Vista was telling me my PC was now infected with a malware program referring to itself as "Starforce". Unknown to me at the time, Two Thrones came with Starforce copy protection, which was now attempting to gain ring 0 access to my PC so that it could perform lewd and unsavoury acts with my drivers.
